Sedation Dentistry at Chattanooga Family Dentistry

Experience Comfortable Dental Care

At Chattanooga Family Dentistry, we see patients every day that get nervous going to the dentist. Many have had a bad experience in the past, have sensitive reactions and reflexes, and others simply don’t like the sounds and smells of the dentist. At any level of anxiety or fear you have; we are here to help you feel more comfortable about staying healthy.

With sedation dentistry, many patients leave our office with confidence knowing they are maintaining their oral health with little or no recollection of the dental visit experiences. At Chattanooga Family Dentistry, we are committed to making sure each visit is as stress-free and comfortable as possible. With no lectures… and no guilt.

We Offer Several Different Types of Sedation Dentistry

With sedation dentistry we use different medications to help you relax during your dental procedure. We offer several levels of sedation from a very mild sedation where you are completely awake and relaxed, to very deep levels of sedation where you may not remember any of the dental procedure at all. Our goal with sedation dentistry is to make you as calm and comfortable as you can be during your visit.

1. Nitrous Oxide - commonly referred to as laughing gas - is a mild sedative pumped though a small mask on your nose which induces a feeling of calmness. The effects of the gas act fast and wear off quickly. Many of our patients choose this option for minor procedures. One the effects of the nitrous oxide wear off they can resume their normal daily activities.

2. Oral Sedation is a stronger form of sedation where we prescribe a small pill to be taken prior to your appointment. With this option, the side effects take a little longer to wear off so you will need someone present to give you a ride to and from the office.

3. IV Sedation is our strongest form of sedation that we offer at Chattanooga Family Dentistry. It is delivered intravenously so that we can control and adjust the amount of medication needed throughout the procedure. IV Sedation Dentistry is the best option for patients who are having longer procedures, have a low pain threshold, or have more intense reflexes. Many patients describe their experience as a deep sleep and often don’t even remember the procedure. With this type of sedation, you will need someone to give you a ride home and to monitor you after your procedure.

What to Anticipate During Your Sedation Dentistry Visit

  1. Initial Consultation: We will review your medical history, explain and explore your sedation preferences, discuss your individual concerns, and answer all your questions. When you are comfortable, we will take a digital x-ray, perform an oral checkup and develop a treatment plan.

  2. Pre-Treatment Guidelines: When your procedure is schedule and type of sedation determine, you will be given specific instructions such as fasting, timing for medications prior to your scheduled visit, and any assistance needed.

  3. Procedure Day: We will help you stay relaxed and ready for your sedation. Our team will begin your selected sedation method and make sure that you are completely comfortable before starting any of the dental treatment.

  4. Post-Procedure Recovery: After your treatment, we will monitor you until we know that you are ok to leave. We will also give you specific post treatment instructions and prescribe any medications you may need depending on the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions We Recieve About Sedation Dentistry

  • Yes, our team will continuously monitor your vital signs during the entire procedure and make sure to adjust the medication as needed.

  • With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you typically stay awake but are completely relaxed.  IV sedation causes patients to have a deeper state of relaxation, but still awake enough to answer questions during the procedure.

  • Nitrous oxide effects wear off very fast, so you are able to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure. With oral sedation and IV sedation it may take several hours for the effects to wear off. With these two methods you must have someone drive you back home.
